"I Dreamed a Dream" is a song from the musical Les Misérables. It is a solo sung by the character Fantine during the first act and the play's most famous number. Fantine who has just been fired from her job at the factory and thrown onto the streets, thinks back to happier days and wonders at all that has gone wrong in her life. She sung the song outlining unfairness and woe in her life, the second half dedicated to her former male partner, who deserted her after the conception of Cosette.
Most of the music is soft and melancholy, but towards the end becomes louder and taut with frustration and anguish; as she cries aloud about the wretched state of her life and her unfair mistreatment. I Dreamed a Dream" starts in E♭ Major, then E Minor, then F Major. The music is by Claude-Michel Schönberg, with orchestrations by John Cameron. The English lyrics are by Herbert Kretzmer, based on the original French libretto by Alain Boublil from the original French production.
