The song was written by The-Dream, Christopher Stewart, Kuk Harrell and Jay-Z, and was produced by Stewart for Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007). The song was originally written with recording artist Britney Spears in mind, however her label rejected it. "Umbrella" is a pop and R&B song and lyrically it refers to a romantic and platonic relationship and the strength of that relationship. It is also listed on The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time at 412.

Singer Skylar Grey was inspired to write and record the demo with Alex da Kid when she felt she was in an abusive romantic relationship with the music industry. Eminem wrote the verses and chose Barbadian singer Rihanna to sing the chorus; their past experiences of domestic violence influenced the collaboration. Recording sessions were held in Ferndale, Michigan, and Dublin, Ireland. Backed by guitar, piano and violin, the track is a midtempo hip hop ballad with a pop refrain and describes two lovers who refuse to separate despite being in an abusive love–hate relationship.

"Unfaithful" is a song by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna from her second studio album A Girl like Me (2006). Written by American singer Ne-Yo, Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen, the song was originally titled "Murderer" and is about a woman who regrets cheating on her partner. "Unfaithful" is a pop ballad that contains prominent R&B elements, and was inspired by the works of American rock band Evanescence. It was released by Def Jam Recordings on June 20, 2006, as the second single from the album. "Unfaithful" received a mixed response from critics; many praised its powerful balladry, but some criticized the lyrics. The song reached the top ten on the singles charts in 19 countries, including the UK Singles Chart, on which it became Rihanna's third top-ten single. "Unfaithful" peaked at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting shipments of over one million copies.

"Don't Stop the Music" is a song by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna recorded for her third studio album Good Girl Gone Bad (2007). It was written by Tawanna Dabney, Michael Jackson, Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen, and produced by the latter two under their stage-name StarGate. The song was released as the album's fourth single on September 7, 2007 worldwide. "Don't Stop the Music" is a dance-pop and techno song that features a wide variety of rhythmic devices used mainly in hip hop music. The song samples the line, "Mama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-ko-ssa" which is taken from Jackson's 1983 single "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'". For using the line, both Rihanna and Jackson faced a lawsuit from the Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango, who claimed that the hook is originally from his 1972 song "Soul Makossa".
